Soul Asylum Reform for New Album
Ok so cult rockers Soul Asylum may have formed way back in 1983, but they sure aren't about to give up what they do best just yet. The favourite band of writer/director Kevin Smith ("Clerks", "Chasing Amy"), they have recently lodged themselves in a studio to record a brand new album - their first since 1998's "Candy From A Stranger" - set for release in March 2006.
Recorded and co-produced by the band with Steve Hodge (Janet Jackson, Sting, Usher, Rod Stewart), the upcoming album isn't the only thing on the band's agenda - they are currently pumping themselves up for a performance at the legendary Bowery Ballroom in New York on the 26th of October.
"I always look forward to playing in New York for obvious reasons," says Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner, before his band mate Dan Murphy explains, "New York is the first city that Soul Asylum did really well in, even before Minneapolis. In the punk heyday, we did a week of sold-out dates at CBGB's. We recorded Hang Time and Grave Dancers Union in New York, so it's like a second home to us."
The guys also assure us that they aren't about to let the quality of this new album suffer in any way. "I'm really proud of this record," said Murphy. "It's a guitar record and it was really fun to record. It will always remind me of Karl when I listen to it. He was really sick, but still pulled through and finished it in Soul Asylum fashion." Pirner continues "It was long overdue to record exclusively in Minneapolis because we hadn't done so in 15 years and the natural surroundings of home was something we needed. We feel extra proud of it because we did it on our own."
Karl Mueller - the band's bass player and a founding member - passed away from throat cancer on June 17th 2005. The album and upcoming shows are dedicated to his memory.
