Sparrows to Launch EP
Melbourne's The Sparrows will be launching their long-awaited EP at Ding Dong on Friday, November 4.
The band features Michael Badger on guitar/lead vocals and Tim Wheatley on bass/vocals, who started performing together in 1999 as Avenue. They formed The Sparrows in early 2004 with the addition of Dylan Boyd guitar/vocals and Brett Wolfenden on drums.
"Avenue was a school band" Michael tells Undercover News. "This is a serious thing and we are now doing the rock thing".
Despite the new blood of '04, some of the old Avenue songs still remain in the set. In fact СThought You Should Know' has been reworked for the new EP. "Brett, the drummer, said we should rework that one. We gave it new life and made it better" Michael said.
Both Badger and Wheatley cite their parents for their musical influences. "I love country and blues. It is the biggest influence on me" Michael said. "I was bought up with a family into that. My father was a huge Small Faces fan and now, so am I. I love everything Steve Marriott ever did".
Tim Wheatley is the son of former Master Apprentices bass player Glenn Wheatley. He likewise acknowledges the family influence. "Of course the Masters were an influence on me" he says. "I even got to fill in for dad occasionally on the Long Way To The Top tour. I did all the shows he couldn't do. I was the youngest one of the tour. It was great. It meant I got all the girls".
The Sparrow EP was recorded in one week at Sing Sing studios with producer Paul McKercher (Pete Murray, You Am I, Eskimo Joe).
They plan to record their album early 2006 and release it midway through next year.
The Sparrows will release the EP next month through Sony BMG.
